Being A Mom is Hard

I'm a realist.
I didn't expect parenthood to be rainbows and sunshine.
Some days are a lot more challenging than others, and not because I have a tough baby. He really is so fantastic and easy going. It's all the other 'stuff' that comes with having a child.

It's a number of things really, but as of late we've been dealing with:

1) Teething. It's terrible and I feel awful for him. He doesn't sleep, he's fussy, he hurts... Poor kid is chewing on everything. Then magically the next day or two, he's perfect! He still has no teeth, but those pearly whites have been bothering him for a while. I just wish one would break through and maybe, just maybe, give him some relief for a day or so before the next one breaks... It's a vicious cycle.

2) Constipation. Ryker has been on solids since he was 6 months old. He is a fantastic eater! We went through veggies; green beans (which he didn't love but he did eat), sweet potatoes, peas, baked chicken, roast beef, pears, prunes, peaches (hated!! That's the only thing he's refused and cried at!). He is a total pro at rice cereal, which he's graduated from, and now we give him a sweet potato and apple oatmeal cereal. He loves it all. I'm a little cautious about what I give him and when. He is still not the best at self-feeding so we decided we would give him some Gerber Puffs to work on that skill. He's doing really well and gets so happy when I start clapping for him when he gets them in his mouth. Last Thursday, Scott and I were having something with avocados. I've heard they are a great 'first food' for babies so I gave him some, without surprise, he loved them!

My kid is very... shall we say... regular. Ha! He is on a clockwork schedule. So I knew something was wrong Friday night when he hadn't pooped. Fast forward to Saturday morning, still nothing. I was honestly worried because this is highly unusual. Saturday afternoon, nothing. Saturday night, nothing. I think it was around Sunday morning at 5am, Ryk woke up screaming bloody murder.  Not like my child, at all. He did not want put down, he didn't want to be held, he couldn't get comfortable. So we ended up spending the rest of our morning out on the couch while I held him in a semi-upright position while he slept. I can only assume it was because the poor kid was so constipated and backed up, he was flipping' miserable. So by this point, I am really concerned. A few times Sunday we would catch him straining himself and crying or screaming. I was really concerned at this point, so I went to the internet to see what was suggested to help relieve constipation in babies. I found a few articles on the internet and from what I could come up with, avocados can cause constipation! We ran into town and picked up some prunes so we could feed him, not to mention I was nursing him nonstop to try and help. It was in the afternoon and still nothing. Since nothing had worked yet, I was trying to think of an adult and what they recommend - exercise. It speeds up your system and therefore flushes you out. So I put him in his Jumperoo. Wouldn't you know it, about 5 minutes of jumping around like an animal he stops and starts screaming, crying, and is bright red in the face...

I am so relieved (pun intended) that's he's finally done his business after two days that I don't even pay attention to what I'm getting myself into. I just grabbed Ryker and took him to his room to change him. I move him from my hip to grab underneath his armpits and I feel a squish... :/ I'll spare you the awful details, use your imagination, but I will tell you this... I was gagging. It also took me and Scott to undress him. Needless to say, we had to put him in the tub afterwards and I had to change my clothes.

You know you're a mother when...?
You have poop smashed in the diamonds of your wedding ring.
THE FOLLOWING DAY.

3) 37th Wonder Week. I don't know how many of my mother friends follow 'Wonder Weeks' but they are they real deal as far as I'm concerned. Leaps, or wonder weeks as the authors refer to them as, are different from growth spurts. They are mental leaps. During the fussy times, you can almost watch your child change from day to day as they are learning the concepts of new things. It honestly is amazing. I really suggest getting the book if you plan on having more babies. The leap we are going through now with Ryk is a doozy. Add in all the above mentioned things, plus clinginess, loss of appetite (in part because he is so busy looking around and taking everything all in), he's shy, sleeping poor, has started to have 'nightmares', refuses diaper changes, sometimes can be totally listless.

This leap affects all five senses. I've noticed Ryker examining things, really studying hard. Different colors are getting his attention that didn't before. He seems things around the house, like Easter decorations for instance, that he hasn't noticed. He is developing new verbal sounds, not to mention is screams or squawks for attention if you aren't looking at him. Ryker is usually about 2 weeks ahead of the age calculation, so I noticed changes at 32 weeks (Saturday was the 34 weeks) they were mild, but they were changes. This leap can last till week 40. So it's long. Very, very long. Especially when you have as good of baby as I do.

4) Sleep. Or lack thereof. We've never really had problems with sleep. I could handle the getting up one, maybe two times a night to feed and go back to bed with no problems. But overnight, he went to getting up 3, 4, 5 times a night. He didn't really want to eat, and he didn't want to sleep. He was just want to have a nice little conversation of bubbles and raspberry blowing. After fighting with him and lots of up/downs, he would crash. Just to get up an hour or two later. Scott and I had to start taking turns getting up with him and putting him back to bed. We knew he didn't need to eat every hour, he was just being difficult. We were honestly exhausted and the day hadn't even began yet. We naturally began to question ourselves and what we were doing wrong, but we also wondered what his schedule was like during the day.

I've commented many times how I struggle with being a working mother. One day after what left like the longest day I've ever lived through, I was driving home and talking to Scott about what would surely be another horrific evening with Ryker. We talked about what we could do different but also what our moms could do different during the day. I can't even remember the question Scott asked me about Ryker schedule during the day, but I couldn't answer it. I really had no clue what his schedule was like during the day. I just broke down into tears and kept saying over and over 'how could a mom not even know her own child's routine??' After some much needed comforting on Scott's part, he and I both decided we could have the mom's fill out a chart for us - feedings, awake time, and nap time - that way he and I could look to see if we needed to make any adjustments. Example, maybe he was sleeping way too long, or he's awake too long..

5) The Grandparents. I hate to even mention the grandparents making our life difficult when they watch him 5-days a week. But when I asked them to fill out the chart so Scott and I are able to see what he does during the day, they went nuts. Especially my mother. You would have thought I was accusing her of beating my child.. I was appalled. I thought I went about it in the most sincere tone, none accusatory (there was nothing to accuse either of them of by the way!), just honestly upset that I don't know what MY SON does during the day. My mom had the guts to say 'you think you're the only mom who has even been tired?!' This was a week ago and I am still fired up by that saying! She also said more than once how she went through it and didn't do anything. I was fed up by this point and told her that's where she and I differ - I was actually trying to be proactive and do something about it.

The whole morning was a total mess and I didn't hear from my mom till the next day. Scott also got a phone call from him mom later that day about it, to which he had to threaten her that if they couldn't do one thing for us that we would find a childcare provider who would. I had a nice chat with my MIL when I went to pick up Ryker about what exactly the chart was for and she finally understood what we were after. My mom, who is so fantastic but can also be the most stubborn person ever, refused to even acknowledge the reasons I was asking such a thing, but did manage to fill it out for us. We still have yet to talk about it...

So, the purpose of this post?

Being a mother is hard.

It's hard for so many reasons we cannot control. For me, there is always the worry that I'm not doing it right. I worry that I should be doing something better or that I'm not doing something I should be. The "what-if's" and "should I" list is endless. I worry so much that I'm not doing enough for Ryker. I worry that I'm not there enough for him. Whether it be a sleepless baby or grandparents that drive me to drink, I just worry. I feel like I miss more than a parent should. I didn't even know his schedule for hell sakes... Sure, I had an idea but I couldn't tell you specifics about his day.

Here I am, five months back to work, some days are easier than others. But there are some days I still dread nearly every second of it. I miss my son.

Being a working mother is hard(er).

I am so grateful I have a husband who is so supportive of me and is trying his hardest to make it so I can stay home. He know it is difficult for me. It's hard for him too, because it's hard for me. We aren't willing to sacrifice the life we have now just so I can stay home. I'll admit, we enjoy the finer things in life and we feel like our son should have the same. He and I realize it isn't in the cards right now, and I do my best to know I am providing Ryker with the life he deserves. It would be a different story if he wasn't in the care of family. Again, how blessed are we that Ryker's grandma's love him enough to watch him everyday. I am grateful for the bond he will have with them and his aunt Sadie. I am grateful for the fact I have a job with fantastic insurance and a boss who lets me take days off when I need to be with my son.

I know one of these days it will happen for us. But you know what? That's not going to make parenting any easier. I'm still going to have a baby who is growing, developing, teething, and who knows what else..

The only thing it will do is give me more time with my baby. But with that, it will bring on its own set of new challenges. And guess what...?

Being a mother will still be hard.

Six Months Photos

I posted a couple teaser photos from Ryker's 6 month photo shoot. I got the disk back last week and I'm so excited to share some other ones! Hope you enjoy!

As you can tell, he HATED these glasses. And I mean... hated.

He kept ripping parsley off that plant:)

Seven Months

Ryker Kay, at seven months you:

  • have officially found your 'boy parts'... and the fun begins
  • are so close to getting on all fours and staying up
  • are a blue eyed baby. They don't seem to change with the color of outfit you are wearing either
  • have figured out how to go in reverse by scooting
  • suck your thumb a little more than before, but you'd rather have your bink instead
  • made your first long car ride to Twin Falls to see your great aunt Dixie and uncle Ivan - you did awesome, with the exception of a mini hunger fit on the way there
  • take two 5oz bottles from your grandma's and have lunch (either a veggie/fruit or cereal) while I'm gone during the day
  • roll around to get places if scooting doesn't do the trick
  • take naps ranging from 30 minutes to 2 hours, just depends on your mood and what kind of day you've had
  • have even more hair than you did last month! It's still up to the jury on what color it will be
  • are rolling around more, belly-to-back and back-to-belly
  • make diaper changes a chore with all your moving around, something is always catching your eye and you roll to grab whatever it is
  • say "ma ma mam mama" and a little "da da dada da" even though I don't think you associate those sounds with mom and dad
  • are the best eater! You have ate everything we've given you; carrots, peas, sweet potatoes, squash, and rice cereal. We've even given you some roasted chicken, mashed potatoes banana
  • are still EBF
  • still wake 1-2 times a night to nurse, but there are nights when you sleep till 4am, just depends on you
  • love to give your puppies love, and even give grandma's kitty loves too
  • are a happy baby! Always giggling and smiling at people, even strangers
  • are now in size 3 diapers
  • are fascinated with the vacuum. You stare at it and you even let me put the sucker on your hands
  • are always getting complimented on what a GREAT baby you are - it's justification to what mom and dad have been saying since you were born :)
  • love to pull the cord to turn the light on at Grandma's house, you're so pleased with yourself
  • have a ticklish back
  • love to hold/eat diaper wipes.. I don't know if it's the cold or the taste, but I can give you one if you're fussing and you settle right down
  • still don't have teeth, but you've been teething a lot lately
  • love the bath. You stick your face in the water and suck on your washcloth
  • are outgrowing your 6mo clothes. We've had to pack some of the smaller outfits away and pull out some 9mo stuff. Tears..
  • amaze mommy and daddy every day - you are growing like a weed, you're smart and so silly. We still wonder what we did to deserve such an amazing baby. These have been the best 7 months we could have ever imagined! We love you sweet boy!

Ryk is a character, here are a couple silly pictures
I took while trying to get a good monthly one of
him and his giraffe

He was laughing - I think the hair tickled his nose :)

A Glimpse...

We had Ryker's 6 month photos taken by Uptown Photography again. Can I just say how much I love Jessamyn?! If you are in the market for family photos, consider this gal! She is so sweet and is so talented. You will not be disappointed! She has been so great with Ryk (she is the one who took our maternity and newborns) and has such a good eye for details.

It's hard to believe my newborn isn't such a newborn anymore.

I don't have them all back yet, but I couldn't resist sharing a few...

Sentimental with time

I'm sure I've said it 100 times before and I'll say it a 1,000 times more - time has seriously flown by. How is it that my newborn baby has been with us for half a year already? It's unreal. I find myself getting more and more sentimental as the weeks and months pass by.

We watch our little guy learn and grow everyday and I'm amazed at the determination he has for things Scott and I take for granted; like grabbing with both hands and giving it an immediate taste test, watching the movements in his little legs as he squeals in the tub.  He's even managed to find his thumb, Wednesday February 5th. He had been shoving his whole fist in his mouth for a few months, and then it went to just a couple fingers. But now, now it's the thumb. As awful as the habit is, it is so cute! I can't stand the thought of yanking his little finger outta his mouth. Hopefully it won't come back to haunt me in a few years!

Monday, February 3rd, Ryker started acting really fussy and stuffing everything he could get his hands on into his mouth, even our hands or shirts, and he would just bite down as hard as he could. We just wrote it off as teething and made sure to give him frozen washcloths (which he totally loves) and gave him some Tylenol before bed. Well Friday, it was so slow at work I just called it an early day and went to my mom's to hang out with her and Ryker. While I was there he was coughing. It's not out of the ordinary, as of late, that's how he'll get your attention. But it kept going on and on and sounded worse. That was just the beginning of everything. He's come down with a cold, equipped with congestion, a runny nose, cough, etc. The poor boy has been miserable and so tired. Over the weekend he got extra snuggles from Mom and Dad. I even stayed home with him on Monday, the 10th, just so I wouldn't have to drag him out in the elements. Sunday afternoon some time, Scott was holding him and he turned to look at dads face and coughed. Needless to say, daddy has picked up Ryk-baby's cold. I tried my best to stay hydrated and stay healthy, but it didn't work. I was sick the 15th-17th. And it even managed to linger around longer than that.

We've had small fights with teeth here and there, a few long nights, and a few screaming fits. Nothing that a little snuggle and Tylenol can't fix. Nothing has popped through yet, but you can sure tell when they are bothering him... Man, the kid has a set of lungs on him and refuses to sleep. I never fully understood "We were up all night with [a screaming/fussy] baby" until we were actually UP ALL NIGHT WITH A SCREAMING BABY. Luckily it's only been 3 nights since birth, and I can tell you exactly the nights and reasons. Basically, it puts life into perspective. I am so grateful Ryker is such a fantastic baby. I don't know how parents do it with colic-y babies. They have my deepest sympathy!

We've been putting him in his bouncy thing more and more lately; the kid loves it. He doesn't exactly bounce just yet, but he gets himself moving and just squeals. It's the cutest thing. He's so proud of himself. Like idiots, we didn't realize there were height settings till Scott started looking at it one day and noticed the '1, 2, 3'. He dropped it down to 1 and Ryk has been going to town. I guess that's what instructions are for, right?

As much as I love to maul the crap outta this kid, we also try to keep him on the floor a little more too. He's been scooting around, pushing himself backwards, and rolling around like a little rollie polly. He is growing so fast and it completely blows my mind how quickly he has changed.

Other than that, everything has been good for the Nelson family. I applied to Grad School a few weeks ago and was accepted, so I'll more than likely start my classes in the summer. I'm nervous and excited to get the ball rolling and graduate. There are some big changes about to happen in the department and I am worried for a number of reasons; new program director, possible merger of two programs, etc.. I would like to think everything will be alright and that I'm over reacting, but the politics of this place would blow your socks off. I'm praying things will hold out until I can finish my program and if possible get out before things get ugly. If not, I've considered changing positions or moving to a different department to work.

To close things up, here's a few pictures from recent happenings...

At the doctors office. Poor kid didn't know what he was in for :(
Mommy felt bad baby had to get poked, so as any girl would do,
I took him to do a little retail therapy. He LOVES these shades.
He just laughs and laughs

Right after his 6 month appointment, we started started rice cereal. I was a little stressed out about starting anything too soon and I also wanted to consult his pedi to make sure we gave him the right stuff to start out with. Lucky for us, the cereal has been a hit (except when it gets too cool) and he loves sweet potatoes! He also loves grabbing the spoon and biting it, blowing bubbles in whatever he's eating -  making a complete mess of himself and mom or dad!

He is such a calm, relaxed baby. Here he is modeling his plaid button down, or as we say
"I'm just like daddy!!"

Loves those toes!

A little documented fit throwing
These couple of shots were from Valentine's day. I made those wings and dressed him up as a little cupid. Thank you Pinterest for the photo opportunity!

Six (6) Months

Ryker Kay Nelson, at six months you:

  • are a screamer. Not the 'I'm going to get mad and scream'... but the 'I just like the sound of my own voice' scream. And it's hilarious
  • have become a thumb sucker to a certain extent
  • have improved so much on your hand-mouth-eye coordination. You grasp things so well with both hands, and then throw whatever it is. Or give it a good taste test
  • have started rice cereal at dinner and don't seem to mind it too much (2.20.14)
  • are still in size 2 diapers
  • are starting to not be such a puker. YAY!!!
  • are outgrowing your 6mo clothes. We've had to move you up to some 9mo things. Tears
  • are still EBF and I could not be prouder that we've made it 6 months
  • are going longer during the day without eating, every 3-4 hours, still taking a 4oz bottle of bm while with your grandma's
  • love to pet your puppy dogs (more like pull their hair)
  • caught your second cold around February 10th - thanks to your Grammy Sandy - then you got daddy and mommy sick
  • push yourself up and try to tuck your legs under you
  • have discovered your toes - and they are delicious, especially while getting a bum change
  • have so much fun splashing in the tub
  • have some hair! It's finally starting to thicken and darken a little - even though everyone seems to think you'll be blonde, I think it's dark
  • have fantastic blue eyes
  • start getting ready for bed at 7:30pm, and if we are one minute late on that, all hell breaks loose
  • get up 1-2 times a night still, and mommy is okay with that
  • give big, sloppy, wet kisses... that usually turn into you sucking on our faces
  • scratch eyes, necks, faces, chests - and it doesn't feel great, I'll be honest. But I think you're learning the concept of depth
  • turn yourself in circles and scoot yourself backwards
  • have the best laugh - it's turned into a full on giggle and you think everything is so funny
  • are great at sitting up on your own
  • have rolled over from tummy to back only a few times. You're just not interested in it
  • just started rolling from back to belly (2.27.14)
At your 6 month appoinment your stats are:
  • 17 pounds 8 ounces (49%)
  • 26.5 inches long (51%)
  • 17 in head (80%) hahaha!

You are such a good boy, and we really mean that. You still aren't much for crying unless you are hungry or really tired. Other than that, you just like to hang out and read books or play with toys all day. You are happy and healthy and that's what matters to mommy and daddy. You have been a complete joy to have in our lives and we are so blessed your sweet spirit is with us. There are days when I struggle to remember what life was like without you.

Happy 6 months sweet baby, we love you so.
